The purpose of this blog is to serve as practice for EDM 510 course

It seems to me that these days we do not grow into creativity we grow out of it. In my experience the education system has a strong tendency to try to squash creativity and focus instead on teaching students better ways to regurgitate facts. Students are taught that there are right and wrong answers. However, when we teach children this they are never able to come up with anything creative.
Intelligence is as diverse and dynamic as the individual student. Educators need to find new ways to bring out these individual types of intelligence in students. Trying new ways is the only way most students could even discover their talents. Students are taught in our schools today that the arts, music and dance aren’t worth exploring because they have no potential for employment. This mentality is evident more everyday as states and cities are cutting back on budgets and cutting the arts right on out. The problem is without the art and integrating the use of multiple types of intelligence the next generation will be devoid of uniqueness and hinder the possibility for creativity. Without creativity nothing new will be discovered in this world.

My question is how important do you think creativity is in the education of our students? What are some ways we as teachers can help students harness and build their creative intelligence?

  1. I think creativity is just as important as rote memorization possibly even more. Creativity in the job market is evident.Jobs in engineering, broadcasting, teaching just to name a few all need very creative thinkers. To help bring out their creativity use diferent methods throughout the school year. Play writing, story writing (like our wiki),movie making, and of course art.

  2. When students are being creative through the visual arts, they are using all the higher-order thinking skills, which is very important for a student’s education. They are using knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Teachers can help students by using more of the visual arts in their lessons. If students are writing a narrative about how to make an ice cream sundae, first, let them draw one, with the types of ice cream and all the toppings they would add. The students would understand the steps of putting a sundae together and see all the ingredients through their art.

  3. I think creativity is very important! As a teacher, I try to guide my student to use their imagination daily and to express what they are thinking by drawing, writing, coloring, etc. I agree that everything we teach is cookie cutter and no form of creativity is aloud but we as teachers need to fit it in somewhere. That is our job. One way I try to harness creativity is to allow them time to illustrate anything we do. I always tell my children when we are making any type of art that they have to fill whatever space they are given and I don't want to see any white space left. It needs to be filled with color.

  4. I agree with each of you but what I really meant by creativity was creative and innovative thought. I recently got certified in "Talents Unlimited" which is program that is integrated into the entire curriculum which focuses on building creative thought. I found it to be very interesting and was wondering if any of yall had heard of similar programs?

  5. I feel creativity is important so students are able to express themselves through writing, sing, music, dancing, etc. I also believe when students are able to be creative in the classroom, it allows them not to feel confined to the traditional classroom setting. They would not feel bored and annoyed.

  6. Students engagement is another important factor in why creativity should be encouraged in the classroom and in all aspects of the curriculum. When students are allowed to be an active part in the lesson they are more likely to be interested.

  7. I think by encouraging them to be themselves will inspire them to be more creative. While teaching I always let my students express themselves however they feel most comfortable.
